Heweliusz creators are making a Netflix series on Poland's 'skin hunters' scandal

The team behind the hit series Heweliusz is taking on one of Poland's most disturbing true-crime cases. Netflix is preparing Skóry ("Skins"), a six-episode psychological thriller about the Łódź "skin hunters" scandal.

What do we know about the series?

Jan Holoubek and Kasper Bajon will direct. The scripts are written by four people: Kasper Bajon, Kinga Krzemińska, Łukasz Czapski and Ksawery Bajon.

Filming will run until April 2027 in Łódź, Warsaw and the Silesia region, including Katowice, Chorzów and Sosnowiec. The series will reach Netflix only in 2028. No cast has been announced yet.

The main character is Bundzior, a former prisoner and failed wrestler who starts work at the Łódź ambulance service. He is soon pulled into a web of ruthless dealings. Netflix stresses that the show is a work of fiction and the creators' own vision, not a journalistic reconstruction of the case.

What was the "skin hunters" scandal?

In 2002, a press investigation revealed that Łódź ambulance workers were selling information about patients' deaths to funeral homes. It later emerged that some of them had deliberately caused the deaths of sick people instead of saving them.

It is considered one of the most notorious criminal affairs in modern Poland, and a stark example of moral collapse inside a public service.

Why tell this story now?

Holoubek says the story "has still not been fully told". He sees a return to it as a way of reckoning with the past and paying tribute to those who lost their lives, and to those who suffered for years because of it. He also wants to show the social and economic context of Poland's transformation era.

Bajon says the series is about greed: what drove these people, and why they could not say "enough", even when a human life was the price. In his words, the wish for quick profit and instant results is something we recognise today too.

What's next?

Holoubek's newest series, Wśród nocnej ciszy ("In the Silence of the Night"), arrives on HBO Max on 13 November. It is inspired by the Połaniec murders. For Skóry, viewers will have to wait until 2028.
