Fabio Silva beats the club that wanted him as Dortmund edge Betis

Borussia Dortmund may have a Serhou Guirassy problem. But thanks to Fabio Silva, they also have a very good plan B.

The Portuguese striker scored one goal and set up another as Dortmund beat Real Betis 2:1 in their Champions League group game. And the opponent made it all the more special.

What happened?

Guirassy, Dortmund's prolific goalscorer, had to leave the pitch injured after just 34 minutes. Silva stepped up as the lone number nine and decided the match.

Coach Niko Kovac sounded cautiously relaxed afterwards. "He felt his thighs. I don't think anything is broken. That's my first thought, or my feeling," he said. The team will wait for medical checks to see whether Guirassy can play at the weekend or needs a longer break.

The next test comes on Saturday at 15:30 in the Bundesliga (Germany's top league).

Why is this goal so special?

Because of who was standing on the other side. Real Betis were one of the clubs that chased Silva very intensively in the summer. Until shortly before the transfer deadline, a departure from Dortmund looked possible, and the 24-year-old was seen as a permanent substitute and one of BVB's big losers.

He proved everyone wrong. He started the season strongly, then scored the equaliser in the 2:2 draw at Bayern Munich in the top-of-the-table clash. Now he has decided a Champions League game against the club that wanted him.

His numbers so far: six goals and three assists in 14 competitive games.

What are people saying?

Konstantinos Karetsas, 18, was named man of the match by UEFA, but he had other ideas. "For me, the player of the match was Fabio Silva, because he scored a goal and an assist," he said.

Sporting director Lars Ricken praised Silva's work rate as the only striker up front. "That's what we want to see from Dortmund players: when things aren't going so well, fight against it, stand up, score goals, help the team," he said. "He's showing that in an impressive way."

There is a bonus for Dortmund too. Guirassy is one of Silva's best friends, and the two work well together on the pitch.
