One of the most celebrated games ever made has just come back. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is out on Nintendo Switch 2 as of 5 November, 28 years after the original.

The timing is no accident. The release comes as the Zelda series marks its 40th anniversary. The remake updates the look and the story and modernizes some of the mechanics, so it plays the way you'd expect a game to play today.

It is led by two veteran Nintendo developers, Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi. Aonuma has said that recreating Zelda with today's technology was an exciting challenge.

A quick recap: the original launched on the Nintendo 64 in Japan on 21 November 1998 and is widely seen as one of the greatest games ever. A 3DS version followed in 2011 with updated graphics and controls.

The early verdict is that, beyond the prettier graphics and handier conveniences, the original design still works. The game's core dynamics have stood the test of time.
